What a wonderful man! We came too late to pick blueberries last season and he offered to let us pick blueberries on his lawn for free. Our deepest sympathies.

I fondly remember Byron largely because of my mom. She knew Byron from attending Albany Farmer’s Market probably back in the 90’s. Mom was always looking for a deal when it came to berry picking. I think I met Byron around 2010 and have picked every year since then, most times with mom in tow. She could always out-pick me. It was fun to watch mom and Byron chatting after picking berries for 3 hours. I remember one spring, mom called me and said she needed a ride to the berry patch for some blueberries. Byron had freezers in his home and he needed to unload them before the season started. So I brought up 4 LARGE Coleman coolers and Byron donated over 50 gallon bags to our local church. I think the church is still using those frozen berries . . . Byron and mom are probably kibitzing in a heavenly berry patch as we are enjoying the berries here on earth.

I’m so sad to hear of Byron’s passing. I will miss chatting with him at the farm. He was always so generous with blueberries for me to use in cooking and canning demonstrations at the Saratoga County Fair. I pray he rests in God’s peace.

I’m originally from Virginia, have been upstate nearly 20 years now, and that farm is one of my most beloved places up here. Simple, slow beauty. Every variety of delicious. I’ll remember his voice, his grin, and him enjoying the daylights out of an egg sandwich one day. Holding him and all y’all in the Light. He done good. Our good fortune.

We have been going to Winney’s for over 40 years and when I was having trouble getting some home blueberry bushes to produce I spoke with Mr Winney on one of our trips to his farm and he was so helpful he even gave me fertilizer and soil amendments to use. So helpful and a pleasure to talk to. I will remember him as a farmer in the truest sense of the word, producing great food to feed his community and very willing to share him knowledge with a stranger.
It will be very sad to not see him next summer. From our family to yours rest in peace and Thank You!

So sad... I'll truly miss him. From our trip to Ireland, years at the farm and a menagerie of cats, I'll always have some special memories. Love you my friend!
